At the height of the Covid crisis, Families in Transition received a NH Housing Authority grant to add space / beds to their homeless shelter on Manchester St, which meant they had to relocate their pantry to make room. In addition to the logistical puzzle of renovating 2 places in use at the same time, the timeframe of 3 months attached to the grant was also challenging. Dennis Mires, The Architects rose to the challenge along with North Branch Construction to renovate a decrepit auto parts building on Lake Ave. Extensive structural repairs, re-roofing, a new mechanical system and new finishes made place for a large receiving area with new walking-in refrigerators and freezers, an office, toilet rooms and the serving space. The project doubled the square footage, providing a grocery shopping like experience to residents dealing with food insecurity in a bright space.
