New Hampshire Institute of Art renovated the existing two story brick building that was Manchester’s first high school and moved it forward on the site over a new basement. A new two story glass walled connector over a basement connects to a new 6 story building over a basement. The 4 upper floors provide dormitory space for 54 beds plus support space. This innovative project included many sustainable strategies and is LEED Gold certified:
- High Performance Envelope
- Heat pipe
- Daylighting with sunshades and light shelves
- Rainwater recycling system for toilet flushing and irrigation
- Vegetated roof
- Ground source heat pump system with ERV
- Photovoltaics
This mixed use property adds to the Institute’s growing urban campus and is within three blocks of all of the other academic buildings in downtown Manchester. This $7 million project was completed Fall 2009.
