Dunbarton Town Hall

The neo-classic building hosting Dunbarton Town Hall and Library is the town’s historical meeting house re-built in 1909 after the original structure (1767 and 1789) succumbed to fire in 1908. It’s located on the town’s green, not far from the town’s office building. In the early 2000, the town funded several studies to renovate and consolidate the town offices, library, and town hall. The different project iterations failed to receive the local votes to proceed with construction. Ultimately the Town Hall was closed to public gathering for lack of proper emergency egresses and fire protection. In order keeping utilizing this historic building, Dennis Mires, The Architects and the board of selectmen focused the last design iteration to create circulation between the building’s 2 floors that is ADA accessible and emergency compliant. An addition was delicately tucked on the back side to house an elevator, toilet rooms and a stairwell. In parallel, the town had a fire sprinkler system installed in the building. The addition is celebrated as if it has always been here thanks to the dedication of Chicoine ’s carpenter, while giving back access to this historical gem to the town.
